Building a blog for my students

I would like to create a blog that will give students the opportunity to use the tools they love in order to complete class work they are unable to complete because of work. I am a special education teacher and I work with students who are 18 to 21 years old in a Strategic Learning Experience (SLE). Our program accepts students with special needs who are entitled to education, beyond the age of 18 and completion of high school. I teach Consumer Mathematics with a push towards balancing a monthly budget, banking skills, and calculating wages. Besides, keeping up with academics my students either have jobs on-campus or off campus at community based businesses. Many students find it difficult to keep up with the academics and most of them would rather be working then participating in a classroom environment.

I would like to begin by setting up a student blog in which students could have access to employment and banking related links. Teachers could create podcast which could teach a lesson and allow students to journal what they though of the podcast or ask questions to other students at their own time and pace. They could address their concerns about graduating, retaining a job, and sharing their work experiences through a discussion board.

Blogging would be a great tool for our students because it will enhance their computer skills, making them more marketable. Secondly, it is important to engage students in their learning by using the tools they enjoy. Lastly, as a teacher, it is extremely important to make learning fun and interesting, so we can create life long learners.
