When I started this course I was a little nervous because I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about technology, but I do not have much opportunity to utilize it in my classroom. But, this course has given me new tools in which to engage my students and the confidence to try new ideas in my classroom. Some ideas I have is to ask a couple students if they would like to create a video podcast for their end of year project, I am also beginning to have my students engage in both local and internet searches to understand their communities.
The idea to use the Internet to discover different communities for our community class came from knowledge I learned in this course. I believe it is important to engage students but sometimes I struggle with instructive teaching and am not always successful. But, in this class I have learned that it is extremely important for students to be given projects that engage them and allow them to create content in which they can be proud of. The special education students I work with are no different and would prefer to work on a project with their friends to research the information, write a script and create a podcast together.
As I continue through my graduate studies of “Integrating Technology Into The Classroom” I have promised to learn more about learner-centered disciplines, so I can empower my students to be pro-active in their learning. If students are engaged in the experience of learning by enabling them to learn content through teaching them the process of how to learn will give them the skills to be a lifelong learner. My second goal is to join a district that is as committed as I am to give students the 21st century tools they will need in order to be successful adults and life-long learners.
